Fosse’s Dream of Autumn staged at Shanghai Intl. Theater Festival

TEHRAN, Dec. 01 (MNA) – Jon Fosse’s Dream of Autumn directed by Iranian director Farindokht Zahedi was staged at Shanghai International Contemporary Theater Festival (ACT).

While maintaining that this play was a joint work with Norway, Farindokht Zahedi told Mehr News, “the Shangahi Theater Festival featured a section on Jon Fosse, the Norwegian playwright and winner of Ibsen award. We staged Dream of Autumn with support from the Norwegian embassy to Tehran at this festival, and it was warmly received by the audience.”

Zahedi mentioned that the play was first translated into English and then into Persian and said, “since we had to submit an English script of the play to Shanghai festival, the work was first translated into English from Norwegian. A lot of time was dedicated to the process of working on the language of this play.”

“The play is also expected to be staged at the 33rd edition of the International Fajr Theater Festival. It is still unknown whether the play would have a public staging,” she said.

Zahedi also maintained that in case of an invitation from Norway, Dream of Autumn will also be staged at this country.

Jon Fosse, born 29 September 1959, is a Norwegian author and dramatist. He has been described as being no ordinary playwright. One of Norway's most famous writers, he is also perhaps Europe's most-performed living dramatist, translated into over 40 languages. In 2010, he won the biggest prize in global theater, the £275,000 Ibsen award, three years after being awarded France's Ordre National du Mérite. It has been said that Jon Fosse is hard to play and has engendered a host of suggested, more or less successful interpretations. Still, there is a growing group of directors and actors of all ages who see him as a liberating voice, and wish to stage his societal critical works.

Started in September 2005, Shanghai International Contemporary Theater Festival (ACT) is an annual international theatrical carnival hosted by Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center. The festival is aimed at promoting original pieces and new elaboration of classics with contemporary spirits.
